A twenty year love affair with Harry Dresden

I picked up my first Jim Butcher novel in an airport. It must have been 2001 or early 2002. I was flying back to Italy from visiting my family in the US and e-readers didn’t exist yet. In fact, I bought my first one in 2004 when Sony came out with the librie. I was an e-book pioneer!

But back to Jim Butcher. I bought the first book in the Dresden Files series, Storm Front, just seconds before boarding, barely having read the back cover. I finished it on my first flight and promptly bought the second book at the next airport. And that’s how my love affair with Harry Dresden, the MC, started. Over twenty-five years and eighteen books later we are still going strong. It’s been my longest relationship.

It hasn’t all been unicorns and rainbows though, he’s ghosted me at least twice! In 2014 after Skin Game I didn’t hear from him for 6 years. It was torture! But my love held strong. I knew he’d be back sooner or later. And I was right. In 2020, we had one of our most intense years ever, Peace Talks and Battle Ground came out within just months of each other. Although, if I must be honest, some of the luster had gone out… he just wasn’t making the effort he should have. I became disillusioned. I felt like those two books could have just been one book and frankly he was altogether too verbose.

I gave up on him, and looked to other pastures. I found new loves and almost forgot about him.

But when it’s true love they always come back. And come back he did. In January, with Twelve Months. Let me tell you… it was like meeting the old Harry again, reuniting with a trusted friend, the same comfort, the same banter, the same energy. I fell in love all over again.

So, if you like urban fantasy, if you’re into funny, slightly awkward, kind of unlucky, but powerful as hell wizards that always save the day but not without putting in their pound of flesh… well… Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden might be your guy. I’m happy to share!
